“When an individual is protesting society’s refusal to acknowledge his dignity as a human being, his very act of protest confers dignity on him.” – Bayard Rustin

Rustin (born March 17, 1912, West Chester, Pennsylvania, U.S.-died August 24, 1987, New York, New York), was a gay civil rights organizer and activist, best known for his work as An adviser to Martin Luther King Jr. and for being a key organizer of the March on Washington in 1963. (Britannica, “Bayard Rustin.” 2021)

Rustin exemplified self-awareness, a core competency of SEL, by maintaining an accurate perception of himself regardless of how other people judged him or his sexual orientation. When you have the self-confidence to walk in your purpose no danger of the mind can trip you up!
